Live / Work Residences

Flexible units that support both living and making, ranging from affordable to market-rate.

Central to the project’s ethos is the question of access. Seven live/work units are designated as affordable housing, with an additional seven reserved for moderate-income residents. As the 11 Flex units have the ability to transition to retail over time, nearly half of the residential component remains accessible to artists operating within constrained economic conditions. This phased adaptability reflects a broader commitment to temporal design, an acknowledgment that architecture must evolve alongside the communities it serves. By embedding flexibility within its programmatic core, the project resists obsolescence and anticipates future modes of occupation.

Work-Only Studios

Dedicated creative spaces for artists who live elsewhere but want to be part of the community.

Galleries

Public-facing exhibition spaces that connect artists to audiences.

Classrooms & Workshops

Spaces for teaching, learning, and skill-sharing across disciplines.

Beyond its immediate users, Blue Mesa positions itself as a regional and international nexus. Its programmatic diversity enables it to host residencies, workshops, and retreats, drawing practitioners into a network that extends beyond the site. Yet its most significant impact may be local through the creation of an infrastructure that allows artists to remain within Santa Fe, an economic and cultural runway that is capable of sustaining both their practices and the cultural identity of the region. In this sense, the project operates as a form of mutual support, an architectural response to the pressures of gentrification and displacement that often accompany cultural development.
